I stayed on July 23, 2022. I’ve led a life far removed from Buddhism and religion, and I came here without knowing much about temple lodgings or even about Mount Minobu. Without any research beforehand, I thought staying in a temple lodge would feel somewhat like a guesthouse. But I was struck by the simplicity and pristine cleanliness of the room and hallways; they radiated a sense of Buddhist heritage and history. Yet, this place isn’t just about the past—it’s a living, breathing space that brings these traditions into the present and continues them into the future. It really is a temple stay in the truest sense. My mother passed away last year, and I had many emotions to work through. During the evening service, the monks kindly read my mother’s name, which felt deeply meaningful. It was like a heartfelt gift that I could carry away with me. I’m truly grateful to the head monk, his wife, and the young monks. Through the head monk’s careful explanations, I felt his sincere passion and the reverence he holds for this way of life. The experience brought me a sense of peace and a moment to reflect on my own path in life. The following morning, I joined the service at Kuonji Temple. The monks accompanied me, explaining the rituals and the significance of Mount Minobu, making me realize that this place is not just a historical site but a living, vibrant sanctuary. This was truly a meaningful experience. Next time, I would love to visit again during the cherry blossom season, autumn foliage, or in the snow. Thank you so much.

Thank you for taking care of me during my stay, and I apologize for the trouble regarding our guest count. The temple at night was so quiet, it felt as if my heart had been cleansed. My daily life is usually hectic, both with work and personal matters, so I spent time reflecting in the detached room. I found myself wondering, “Why is this place so calming? What does it have that brings this peace?” I even made a list of the items in the room, realizing that, truly, just a few essentials are enough. It was an incredibly meaningful experience. Next time, if I have the chance, rather than doing zazen meditation or sutra copying, I would love to just have a conversation with the head monk. I would really appreciate that opportunity.Though it’s quite a distance from home, I’d love to visit again, as I’m also a big fan of the nearby whale museum. Take care, and thank you once again.

I enjoy visiting temples and shrines, so I was thrilled to finally visit Kuonji Temple, a place I’d long wanted to see. Although the head monk was away, I had asked to participate in sutra copying as well as both the morning and evening services—a rather ambitious request! To my surprise, they kindly arranged for a substitute monk to guide me, and I was genuinely touched by their thoughtfulness. It made for a truly special experience.I was the only guest staying that night, so I had the rare privilege of having the monk’s guidance during the services and sutra copying—a wonderfully luxurious and humbling experience that I could never find in a high-end hotel or ryokan. The room, bath, and restroom were spotless, and the meals were delicious. Hearing about Mount Shichimen from the monk and temple staff inspired me to visit it someday, and I’m now committed to building up my stamina for the journey. Both the monk and the temple staff were incredibly kind, and I wholeheartedly recommend a temple stay to anyone who hasn’t tried it yet. I believe it offers a genuine sense of spiritual peace, far beyond what an ordinary sightseeing trip can provide.Thank you very much for this unforgettable experience.

We like the calmness and serenity of the facility. Wonderful staff and Head Priest who were so patient and kind. The temple was clean and allowed us the space to reflect. The room was comfortable and had sufficient heating. The in room washroom and washer/dryer was excellent. We participated in the temple activities such as the morning prayer, sutra copying and a search for a key in a dark room. All of them were wonderful experiences which we will treasure. We will highly recommend this hotel to our family and friends. Thank you for having us.

I can’t recommend this place enough! It is very close to the train station and the host provided EXCELLENT instructions and photos on how to get there. It is located next to the train tracks but the noise really isn’t bad. most trains stop service past 2200 so it did not bother us at all. It looks exactly like the photos. The hosts are amazing and responsive if there are any issues. The temple is beautiful and the people that work there are the friendliest I have met in all of Japan even just seeing them for a moment. The temple is beautiful and peaceful.
